Birth And Death Registry Urge General Public To Register Relatives

General News Birth And Death Registry Urge General Public To Register Relatives
SEP 20, 2018 LISTEN

The Birth and Death Registry in the country has urged the General Public especially Parents and Care-takers to prioritize registering new born babies to be given birth certificates as well as making it a point to report death of relatives.

According to them, Ghanaians have neglected acquiring birth certificates but what they do is wait until they need it urgently before they rush to the Birth and Death registry to be issued one. Although the certificate is a tool for formulating some Government policies, some parents particularly those in the rural areas do not make it a priority to acquire one for their new born babies.

The Acting Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Rev. Kingsley Asare Addo speaking at this this year’s registration day and awareness celebration has advised Ghanaians to desist from that behavior and make it a point to acquire birth certs for new born babies as soon as they are born.

“The situation in this country where people only think about birth certificates when they need passports or when they have an interview date or when they are enrolling into nursing training should be discouraged. Birth certificates and birth registrations should be done as and when the event of birth occurs”, Rev. Addo said.

He continued; “Am appealing to Ghanaians to ensure that parents and care-givers will take advantage of all these opportunities we are offering to ensure that they do not wait for us to come after them to register their births”.

He further pleaded with the general public to see it as part of their civic responsibility to report the births of their children for registration for free.

Meanwhile the Birth and Death registry is calling on Government to support them to achieve a 70% coverage of the Ghanaian public as they commence this year’s registration day and awareness celebration.

Deputy Minister of local government and rural development, Mr. Kwasi Boateng Adjei who was at the event has assured the registry that government has plans they are about to roll out which will enhance the operations of the registry.
