NGO Calls For Protection Of Pregnant Women

Dr Juliana Aboagye Antwi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Help Save the Pregnant Woman Foundation, has called for the prosecution of herbalists, spiritualists and religious institutions whose services to pregnant women ends in their death.

The CEO of Help Save the Pregnant Woman Foundation Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) said most pregnant women die due to delays by these herbalists and spiritualists.

She called on government to provide legal services to the families of pregnant women who died out of the negligence of herbalists and spiritualists.

Speaking at a press conference at Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality, Dr Antwi called for the prosecution of parents who neglect their responsibility to their pregnant daughters.

She called for the passage of a law to make men full responsible for their pregnant wives.

Dr Antwi said health workers who torture, beat, insult and ignore pregnant women who visits the health centres which affect their pregnancy also need to be prosecuted.

She hinted that a research conducted by her outfit in various communities in the Eastern Region indicate that over 60 per cent of pregnant women who visits herbalists ends up having complications during delivery and in some cases deliver children with disabilities .

In view of this, she called for training and certification of herbalists and Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) especially those in deprived communities.

The Help Save the Pregnant Woman Foundation is a non- governmental organization established in 2013 to see to the welfare of pregnant women and teenagers in the district and the country at large.

It also aims at reducing child mortality by educating and supporting pregnant women and teenagers.
