Feature Article Osei Kwame Despite Builds New Police Station at Tesano: Is My Mother Safe?
MAY 9, 2018 LISTEN

An Africa nation with a white mentality is just a photocopy. Here let us look at Ghana with a distinct mentality. ‘’ ...I promise to defend the good name of Ghana with all my strength and with all my might…’’: the Ghanaian mentality connotes this as a statement that confirms our knowledge of what is right and not a pledge, to admit that Ghana is in danger would not be a gross over simplification of reality. Indeed, we have failed our mother and gone back on our promise to keep her safe.

On 7 May 2018, I rose only to see on news headlines that a philanthropic individual has provided the nation with a police station in fact an ultra-modern one at that. I would understand if the state has no money to revamp our hospitals and roads thereby leading to aids from private individuals but an institution as important as a police service? Being blind is one thing but feigning blindness is highly unacceptable.

The protection of any nationals’ dignity rests heavily on the exemption of its institutions from prejudice in administering justice. The power of an individual in a police uniform is highly controlling hence defending the integrity of such clothed persons should be taken with utmost seriousness by state leaders. The Police are people we encounter daily in our communities, these are people we trust to maintain peace, these are people we disclose our greatest fear to and the very people we believe avert justice when convenient to their pocket. An action Ghana would forever regret is to feed a kleptomaniac street child with a golden spoon. I was so disappointed to see songs praises in the mouth of naïve people and the promising president of the Republic of Ghana inaugurating the said police headquarters. Are we that myopic to see the hell we are plunging our mother Ghana into?

Osei Kwame despite an entrepreneur and a successful one at that has been ‘kind’ to mother Ghana, where our leaders have failed; he has dutifully intervened as a responsible citizen. Nevertheless, to go as far as receiving a police station from him is all hell break loose. Have you thought of a relative of Kwame despite arrested in that very hospital? Should Kwame Despite control a gang of cocaine dealers or robbery gang who end up thrown into the very prison he single handedly built, how would they be treated, that is if they are even jailed in the first place. The tendency of prisoners walking as free men on the streets to carry out operations and go back to jail at night is very high. My mother Ghana is not safe.

It is ethically wrong, institutionally wrong and objectively wrong. In addition, I do not see anything going right about this. Let us rise to defend the country by giving back this stringed attached police station and maintain a free and fair front to keep Ghana safe.
