Citizens Call For The Involvement Of Communities In Project Implementation

Citizens in the Techiman Municipality have called on government to ensure that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies involve communities in project implementation to ensure value for money.

The call was made at a meeting organized by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Campaign Coalition and its local partner Local Accountability Network (LANET) in Techiman. The project which seeks to reduce the abuse of public funds by public officials is been supported by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).

The project monitors physical infrastructure development in the Techiman Municipality to ensure that projects are executed to standard and that the project gives value for money. Presenting the report on the monitoring of selected projects in the Techiman Municipality at a meeting of stakeholders in Techiman, the Focal person of the Local Accountability Network(LANET) in the Techiman Municipality and Executive Director of Centre for Prosperity Interest Organization(COPIO) an NGO bemoaned the shoddy work done by some contractors. He mentioned the shoddy work on the Akisimaso Health Centre which cannot be used for the intended purpose.

He, however, praised the quality work done on a school building at Nkwaeso and urged other contractors to emulate the work of that contractor.

A research Officer of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Campaign Coalition, Mr. Harrison Kojo appealed to participant to avoid politicizing developmental issues. This he said will put duty bearers on their toes for speedy development of the Municipality.

The representative of the Techiman Municipal Assembly, Mr. Daniel Mensah was full of praise for organizers of the programme. He appealed to citizens to join the fight against corruption to ensure the efficient utilization of resources for speedy development.

The report under review covered projects in Nkawaeso, Aworopata, and Akisimi under health and education within the Techiman Municipality.
