Ernest Green, the 24-year-old nurse accused of raping an Italian woman at the Damongo Government Hospital in the Northern Region, has been granted bail by a high court in Tamale.

The accused was granted a GH¢100,000 bail with one surety.

Colleagues of the accused from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), including its national president, Asante Krobea, were in court to show solidarity with their colleague.

After the accused had been granted bail, the GRNMA members expressed their happiness, having previously protested when the accused was refused bail at the last adjourned date.

Mr. Geen was detained by the police when he was suspected to have raped an Italian woman on admission at the Damongo Government Hospital; and was subsequently taken to court and remanded into prison custody pending investigations.

The police gave the name of the victim as Daniela, who had been rushed to the hospital after suffering from a bout of malaria.

Upon her arrival, Green allegedly informed her of the availability of a private ward at the infirmary and reports say he also helped her to lie on the bed.

“Suddenly, he fondled my breast, removed my panties and eventually penetrated me,” the victim is quoted as saying to the police.

The victim said even though she was conscious during the act, she was extremely weak to stop Green.
