Alhaji Dr Sulemana Iddrisu, Principal of the Tamale College of Education has appealed to the government to inaugurate new Governing Councils for the 46 Colleges of Education in the country to enable them function effectively.
He said 'The absence of Governing Councils in the Colleges of Education since the tenure of the erstwhile Councils ended has been a bottleneck, affecting critical decision taking in the Colleges.'
The absence of the Governing Councils means that the Colleges of Education cannot take major decisions that affect their effective functioning as the Governing Councils are mandated to advise on such decisions.
Alhaji Dr Iddrisu made the appeal when addressing the sixth congregation of the Tamale College of Education held in Tamale on Saturday where a total of 485 students consisting of 372 regular, 85 Untrained Diploma in Basic Education and 28 sandwich students graduated with Diploma in Basic Education.
Ten students, made up of six graduands and four continuing students, who distinguished themselves in academic exercise, received various awards packages as part of the Principal's Excellent Awards.
Alhaji Dr Iddrisu also spoke about the continued lack of financial clearance for recruitment in the Colleges of Education saying it posed a serious challenge for effective administrative and academic work appealing to government to give financial clearance for recruitment.
He said 'As a result of the increased enrolment of students, there is the need for employment of faculty members, administrative and other staff. It is also significant to note that more hands are needed to replace those on retirement.'
On the infrastructure situation of the Colleges of Education, he said they were acutely constrained in offering admissions to all qualified applicants due to inadequate learning space appealing to the government to expedite action on completion of ongoing projects at the Colleges to address the situation as well as facilitate their tartarisation process.
He appealed to the government to increase funding to cater for the increased number of students desiring College Education 'So that government will meet its constitutional duty of providing affordable and accessible quality education to all.'
Mr Solomon Boar, Deputy Northern Regional Minister expressed government's commitment to expand access to education in the country assuring that ongoing infrastructural projects at the Tamale College of Education would be completed.
Mr Boar advised the graduands to continue to seek higher education to sharpen their skills while ensuring improved productivity.
