Observing World Social Justice Day: Workers On The Move, The Quest For Social Justice

Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.

According to the UN, Most migration today is linked directly or indirectly to the search for decent work opportunities.Employment is not the primary driver, it usually features in the migration process at some point. The ILO estimates that there are roughly 150 million migrant workers. Among migrant workers, 56 per cent are men and 44 per cent are women.

The Coalition of NGOs Associated with UN-DPI Ghana (CUNANGOs), believes that equity in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society and for that matter Ghana, will go along way to develop individuals and the country at large.

The equal distribution of resources and opportunities protects human dignity, prevents social vices such as armed robbery and conflict. It also helps in the development of the human resource of society and fosters unity peace and stability as well as national development.

The significance of the subject however makes it expedient for non-governmental and religious bodies among others to help in ensuring social justice in Ghana.The cry for “social justice” is a call for the State to do something to fix economic and relational inequities without any regard to a universal principle of justice.

By describing justice in a social rather than legal terms, our attention is immediately drawn to national problems that can only be fixed by a civil government with enough power to enforce its policies. So then, CUNANGOs is of the conviction that the State plays the major role in rectifying social problems because they are national in scope.

Domestic workers are faced with social injustice in the course of their duties, eg some of them work for long hours without or with little pay. Also, they are faced with sexual harassment, therefore, on this day that we are celebrating Social Justice Day, we are calling on the authorities to ensure that these workers are well protected from those injustices perpetuated to them.

CUNANGOs urges citizens to be Peacebuilders in a world that is rapidly losing its sense of love and justice for all. This is a time of active hope; hope that will strengthen us to save our beloved country and our world which are scarred by violence and discord; hope that will fill our hearts with mercy, love, compassion and forgiveness so that we will live as citizens of one Ghana won for us.
