Women Empowerment Given A Major Boost Through Queens College Skills Development

At a time government is seeking to entrench vocational education and impart a spirit of entrepreneurship on its youth, a major milestone has been achieved with a grand opening of the Queens College in Adenta, Accra for career and skills development.

A completely private initiative, birthed after five years of incubation, Queens College, is to serve a dual purpose of providing a holistic education for the youth, mostly women, while still creating entrepreneurs for the future.

At a brief but grand opening session at the Adenta premises of the college, Monday, the Principal, Rev Prince Adu Darko in his welcome address described the College as a "training center for women of integrity."

The College, he says, will provide three-years of intensive training for students with the hope of empowering as well as providing them with employable skills to cater for their needs and those of their dependents.

The Board Chairman of the College Dr. Mrs Mercy Akrofi Ansah, explained they had to begin the College with women “because they are the most vulnerable in the society.”

“With time, we will open our doors to men as well,” she promised, adding, the college will make a concession to also admit students with low literacy performance but will be made to undergo competency–based training and take practical examination only.

The Queens College is providing elective courses in Fashion and Décor, Catering and Service Training and Personal Care Assistance with core courses in English and Communication skills, Entrepreneurial skills Basic Bookkeeping and IT Skills.

In a country where the aged are mostly ignored, Dr. Mrs. Akrofi Ansah said the students will be given hands-on training on how to care for the aged in the society as well as vulnerable groups in the country.

Certified by the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), the Queens College will run a trimester system beginning from January to December every year with three vacations.

Dr Akrofi Ansah said with time, the College will include a remedial session for graduates of the senior high school and also add home management as one of the courses to be treated.

The pioneer students and teachers were later introduced to the attendees of the ceremony after which the Principal, Rev Adu Darko took the attendees round the College’s facilities.
