Sekyere East Makes Progress In Capital Project Performance

GNA

The Sekyere East District Assembly has received high marks for transparency and accountability in its capital projects implementation.

It scored 98 per cent in the area of project contractor selection and contracting, 74 per cent, when it came to project execution, and 94 per cent, in terms of citizens' perception of project benefits.

The assembly's overall score under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Ghana's Strengthening Accountability Mechanisms (GSAM) project, came to 80 per cent.

GASM is aimed at making stronger citizens participation and oversight of capital development projects to bring transparency and answerability in local government.

The project is jointly spearheaded by CARE, OXFAM, Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) and Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP).

Mr. Peterson Asare, Chief Executive Officer of the CEDEP, speaking at forum held at Akokoaso to disseminate information on the assembly's capital projects performance, said it was one of the 50 assemblies selected across the country for the GASM project.

He encouraged the chiefs and people in the communities to show keen interest in the activities of the assemblies.

They should actively participate in the planning and implementation of government's funded development projects in their various areas.

He added that it was time they held duty-bearers both in their community and the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies accountable.

Nana Agyei Baah II, Akyeamehene of Effiduase and Chairman of the district's GSAM, said the goal was to help empower and inspire the people, particularly, women to get involved in decision making.
