Accra. 4th December, 2017 – Odebrecht Engineering and Construction International has organized a free Prostate Cancer Education and Screening exercise for its employees. In a very eye-opening session, staff members were taken through signs and symptoms of Prostate Cancer and how to detect it early. Men from the age of 40 years and above were screened afterwards at Medlab Ghana, one of the leading medical laboratories in the sub-region.

Dr. Michael Kwaffo from Medlab Ghana, emphasized that man's prostate produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm, so it is a very important organ in the body. He mentioned that when Prostate Cancer occurs, its symptoms include difficulty with urination, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

According to him, some types of Prostate Cancer grow slowly. In some of these cases, monitoring is recommended. He added that other types are aggressive and may require radiation, surgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy or other treatments. He strongly recommended early checks and treatments. Men, from the age of 40 years should at least have their prostate checked by a Urologist once a year.

David Odoi-Anim, a staff at Odebrecht Ghana commended the company, he said; “Odebrecht is one of the few companies in this country that takes the issue of Prostate Cancer seriously. Since many men between the ages of 40 and 65 years, experience this disease, it is imperative that more awareness is created about it. We are glad that our company provided the platform for both male and female workers to learn more about the disease and how to prevent or treat it.”

Last year, Odebrecht organised a similar exercise for its staff and conducted a prostate cancer screening for its male staff from the age of 40 upwards. Last month, the company organised a free Breast Cancer education and screening for its staff.

Odebrecht Engineering and Construction International was awarded the CSR Engineering Company of the Year at this year’s Ghana CSR Excellence Awards organised by the Centre for CSR, West Africa, for the company’s exemplary achievements in both external and internal CSR projects, interventions and activities.
