OCT 2, 2015 LISTEN

The Inspector General of Police has pledged the commitment of the administration to achieve and maintain the highest standards of policing in the country.

Speaking at the grand opening and handing over ceremony of a newly built police station at Spintex in Accra, funded by Manet Company Limited, Mr. Alhassan called on the police officers to eschew all acts of indiscipline.

“I will entreat all officers and men within this jurisdiction to stand up to the challenge of law enforcement and give these communities the protection and services that they rightfully deserve” he stressed.

He said, the police like any other organization has challenges in providing adequate office accommodation for its staff thus they will welcome private public partnership especially with GREDA to provide critical infrastructure for the police.

He therefore welcomed the benevolent gesture by Manet Company Limited and other partners which led to the building of the police station.

The edifice was put up at a cost of $200,000 and will to strengthen the provision of security services within the Manet Court, Regimanuel Golden Gate, Devtraco, Kasaglobal and Mariville estate area.

The police station will also serve as the Baatsona Divisional headquarters, Okpoi Gonno District headquarters and holding cells.

The Managing Director of Manet Group, Martin Beeko said the new police station is to ensure water-tight security for its customers in and around Spintex, a major industrial and commercial hub in the country.

He said having been in the industry for 21 years, the management of Manet Group acknowledges the importance of community policing to ensure development and limit crime.

Mr. Beeko added the $ 200,000 edifice has close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, a charge office, cells, a CID office, an exhibit store as well as a commander’s office.

For his part, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohonu said security had been an issue to contend with in Manet and its environs some years ago.

But the routine patrols, surveillance, intelligence-led operations, periodic swoops and cultivation of informants have led to the arrest and prosecution of hardened criminals who terrorized residents for years.

DCOP Tetteh Yohonu commended the Manet Group for committing its resources to bring the police to doorstep of the community.

He urged residents on the Spintex road to form community watch dog committees to complement the work of the police.

“The police will continue to appeal to the public to consider it as their civic responsibility to support the Police with timely credible information since effective policing thrives on high intelligence gathering which can be illicit with our community” he stated.

DCOP Tetteh Yohonu called on other corporate bodies and philanthropists to support the police rid Accra off criminals.
