More rot at NSS: Illiterates register as service persons

New revelations in a corruption scandal that has rocked the National Service Scheme is that illiterates were able to secure National Service Identification cards as service personnel.

According to the Daily Graphic newspapers the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) has commenced investigation into the matter.

"Some service persons have also been found to be either secondary school leavers or never entered any tertiary institution. Mostly, young people are eligible for national service after successfully completing tertiary education", the newspaper reported in its October 10, 2014.

Also use of fake documents and impersonation to gain access to the scheme was also uncovered, according to Daily Graphiic.

According to the newspaper BNI investigators however found out that some of these service persons could not write their names.

Some officials of the National Service Scheme (NSS) are alleged to have connived with illegal recruitment agencies to recruit the unqualified persons for a fee.

These unqualified persons were given identification cards and posted to parts of the country to do their service.

Five of them were picked up by operatives of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in the Western Region while going through the registration procedure.
