Accra, Aug. 11, GNA – Ghana Christian Council of UK and Ireland in conjunction with the Ghana High Commission would on August 18, organise a memorial and thanksgiving service for the late President John Evans Atta Mills in London.

A three-member delegation of the council that attended the burial and funeral service of the late President in Accra on Friday who made this known to the Ghana News Agency said the programme is aimed at celebrating the life of the president.

The delegation comprised Dr Lawrence Tetteh, Chaplain of the council, Reverend Canon George Ansah, Chairman of the body and Vicar and Anglican Borough Dean of Lambeth, London and Dr Shadrach Ofosuware Vice Chairman of the council.

Dr Tetteh lauded the sense of unity and solidarity Ghanaians displayed to bid the late President farewell and said it showed that the citizenry are prepared to live in peace and harmony and ensure an incident-free General Election on December 7.

“ I was particularly moved by the way former President Jerry John Rawlings and President John Agyekum Kufuor paid their last respect to the late president. The ruling National Democratic Congress and the main opposition New Patriotic Party and other political heads also showed that national cohesion is possible in Ghana.

“ I thank God for the life of Professor Atta Mills and it is a wake- up call that our lives are not in our hands, we have a limited time on earth and as leaders we should think of the legacy we would leave behind,” Dr Tetteh said.

He asked Ghanaians “not to see positions as possessions”, because it is an opportunity given by God to exploit one's talent on earth to serve.

Rev Ansah said the funeral of Professor Atta Mills bore testimony of the true and genuine Godly spirit of Ghanaians and also a reflection of the country's evolution into a nation of trusted leadership with integrity and loyalty.

He said the late leader left a lasting legacy and a benchmark of probity and stewardship.

“He has demonstrated that it is possible for a world stage leader to demonstrate his faith in God without apology,” says Rev Ansah.

Dr Ofosuware said he was touched by the personal attributes of President Mills, which were detached from vindictiveness and asked leaders of the nation to take a cue from him.
