Agona Duotu, (C/R), May 05, GNA - A heavy downpour that hit the Agona East District of the Central Region has rendered more than 400 people homeless in the eight communities and destroyed properties worth one million Cedis.
Mr Francis K. Baidu, Agona East District Director of the National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO) who made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after touring the affected communities, said 139 structures built with local materials were destroyed.
The Director was accompanied by Mr Martin Luther Obeng, Agona East District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr John Kuntu Blankson, Deputy District Director of NADMO and other officials.
He said the affected communities included Agona Duotu, Kenyakor, Mankrong, Akwakwaa, Kwame Egyin, Akrabon, Fante Bawjiase and Esuso.
Mr Baidu said the victims mostly farmers are currently putting up with their relatives, friends, and at classrooms and church buildings.
The District Director said an official report has been submitted to NADMO Regional headquarters in Cape Coast and National headquarters Accra for immediate action.
He appealed to Non Governmental Organizations, foreign donors and the government to come to the aid of the victims to alleviate their suffering.
Meanwhile, Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, MP for Agona East has also toured affected communities to access the damage caused and see how best assistance could be given to them.
He assured the victims that he would make effort to get them iron sheets and other building materials to help reconstruct their houses.
