Accra, Aug. 31, GNA - A trader, Martha Yakubu, who allegedly mixed a local concoction known as "Okumadada" with acidic battery water and gave an enema to an eight-year-old girl on Tuesday appeared before a Circuit Court in Accra for negligently causing harm.

Minutes after Martha believed to be in her late 60's had given the enema, to heal the victim's stomach pain, she collapsed.

The victim, who was rushed to a clinic in Tema, was referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, in Accra.

Martha pleaded guilty and was convicted on her own plea but the court deferred sentence to September 14 and remanded accused into prison custody.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah told the court that Martha was the victim's aunt and they lived at Community 2, Tema, while victim's mother lives at Sefwi Wiawso, in the Western Region.

The prosecution said in the evening of March 30, this year, victim went to play with her peers, and on return complained of stomach pain after which the accused gave her the enema.

ASP Acquah said at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, victim underwent surgery and had her sealed anus opened.

She said the matter was reported to the Police Headquarters and it later transferred to the Domestic Violence and Victim's Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service.

ASP Acquah said that although the victim had been discharged, she was receiving further treatment.

Sadia Adams, mother of the victim, told journalists that she would take the victim to Sefwi Wiawso after the determination of the case.
