More people die in accidents in Swedru Divisional Area in 2009

Agona Swedru, Jan 25, GNA - A total of 99 persons died through 573 motor accidents in 2009 as against 55 in 2008 and 331 in 2008 in the Agona Swedru Police Divisional Area.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police Samuel Yankey, Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Services said the area covers Winneba, Apam, Kasoa, Awutu Bawjiase Awutu Beraku and Agona Swedru.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Agona Swedru, Mr Yankey said 589 people got injured in 2009 as against 303 in 2008.

He said 725 vehicles were involved in accidents in 2009 as compared to 425 the previous year and that most of the accidents could be attributed to wrongful overtaking, overloading and careless driving.

Mr Yankey said the Swedru Divisional MTTU Command had drawn up a programme to help reduce accidents in the Divisional Area.

Under the programme meetings and seminars would be organised to educate drivers.

Mr Yankey said the Divisional MTTU would step up motor checks especially on the Cape Coast/Accra road.
