RESIDENTS OF Tanoso and Techiman, both in the Kwadaso constituency of the Kumasi Metropolis, may soon heave a sigh of relief from the frequent casualties and inconveniences experienced by the two communities, as a result of a broken down bridge.

The damaged bridge, which serves as the major link between the two communities, caved in few months ago, creating a lot of transportation problems for the two towns.

The people of Techiman, in particular, are the worst hit, as the bridge serves as the main route where residents pass to the central business district.

Following the destruction of the bridge, the people in the community have been experiencing constant flooding anytime it rains, because a local river called Asuoyeboah, overflows it banks and causes destruction to life and property.

The repair of the bridge, which was made possible through the instrumentality of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, comes as a relief to the people in the communities.

The scope of work would involve the re-construction of the damaged bridge, and tarring of the road with asphalt.

The MP said when his attention was drawn to the bad nature of the bridge about two weeks ago, he made a passionate appeal to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), through the Metro Director of Urban Roads, who swiftly responded to the situation.

Some residents complained, during a visit to the site by the MP, that due to the collapse of the bridge, they are compelled to walk a long distance to board vehicles, while taxi drivers, who used to ply the road, have all refused to use a detour which leads to the Techiman community, complaining that the road was too long and rough.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie deplored the poor road networks in the constituency, and attributed the situation to the fact the constituency was a young one which was detached from the Bantama constituency few years ago.

He, however, promised to ensure that all the major roads in the constituency were giving a facelift during his tenure as the Member of Parliament for the area.

He therefore commended the KMA and the urban roads for their quick response, and appealed to the contractor to speed up work on the bridge, to alleviate the plights of residents of the two communities.
