A six-member inter-ministerial Emergency Technical Committee on floods has been formed to serve people affected by floods in the Accra-Tema metropolis on a 24-hour basis.

The Committee, which would ensure that all choked drains are cleared before the start of the rainy season to allow free passage of water, is the government's permanent response to the perennial problem of flooding in the metropolis.

Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, told the GNA in an interview last week that the committee would be on the alert to receive emergency calls and offer assistance where necessary to prevent floods and assist victims of floods.

The Committee, chaired by Mr Samuel Baidoo of the Ministry of Works and Housing, includes Mr Michael Forson of Urban IV, Mr Kofi Ametepe of Hydrological

Services Department, Mr J.O. Amoo Gotfried of Metro Roads Department and Mr Kofi Howard of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Mr Baah-Wiredu urged the public to contact the members, whose office would be sited in the Ministry of Works and Housing.
