Kenyan women embark on sex strike… .Over socio-political impasse

Several women groups in Kenya have staged a week- long sex strike in an attempt to get their men folks to take a more serious look at the socio-political crisis that has been ravaging the country for a long time now and make committed efforts towards resolving them.

Ten non-governmental organizations urged women across the country to boycott sex with their husbands and partners with additional statements calling for reforms in government and actions geared towards the promotion of women's right.

Chairperson of the Women's Development Organization, Rukia Subow, said the group believes that the boycott would persuade the men to press the government for decisive actions towards the resolution of the crisis in the country.

The group which also made provisions to pay prostitutes to join in the strike stressed, ”this is a national boycott to show that women of this country have resolved to push for reforms. We want an urgent solution to the political problems facing our country”.

Ida Odinga, wife of the Prime Minister, Raila Odinga joined the strike to protest the discord between her husband and the country's president, though it is not yet certain whether the wife of the President, Mwai Kibaki joined the strike.

The East African country has been embroiled in political conflict since their presidential election in December, 2007 in which Odinga accused Kibaki of electoral malpractice Ensuing protest degenerated into political violence leading to the death of over 1000 people with over 600,000 others rendered homeless.

The international community however brokered a power sharing deal between the two but the coalition has been crippled by disputes and divergent policy interests.
