A rainstorm that hit Awukugua in the Eastern Region at the week end destroyed at least six houses and others had their roofs ripped off.

About 40 people have been rendered homeless and are lodging with fiends and relatives.

A new church building belonging to the Victory Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana had part of it destroyed.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday, the assembly member for the Awukugua electoral area, Mr Kofi Manu, expressed worry about the damage caused by the storm.

He said the area had not experienced such incident for the past 30 years and attributed the disaster to indiscriminate and illegal felling of trees.

Reverend Asiamah Koranteng, Abiriw District Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, expressed shock about the damage done to the church building and said it had taken the local congregation many years to bring the building that far.
