THE Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed worry about the spate of encroachment on school lands in the region.
It said many individuals and groups of people were not only encroaching on school lands, but were actually taking over all lands belonging to schools.
Linus Cofie Attey, the Regional GNAT Secretary, expressed the worry at a two-day workshop to review the new educational reform programme one year after its implementation.
He appealed to traditional authorities, members of parliament, assembly members and opinion leaders to assist in addressing the problem.
The workshop, organised by GNAT and attended by circuit supervisors and heads of schools in the Bawku West municipality, was aimed to review and make inputs to improve upon the reforms.
Mr Attey stressed the need for the government to improve teachers' salaries and conditions of service and also provide them with logistics to enabe them to meet the challenges confronting the new educational reforms.
He appealed to teachers in Bawku to be ambassadors of peace and to preach it to the people in the area to help sustain it.
