More than £1 million worth of drugs have been seized during a raid on a luxury cruise ship.

Seven people were arrested after officers swooped on the P&O ship Arcadia while it was docked in Southampton.

Four of those arrested had a total of 30kg of cocaine strapped to their bodies.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the UK Border Agency seized drugs with an estimated street value of £1.2 million during the raid.

The seven arrested are from Birmingham and Manchester. They are in custody and no charges have yet been made. None of the seven detained was a crew member.

HMRC Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation Peter Avery said: "Drugs devastate lives and communities and we are determined to prevent them reaching UK streets.

"Our investigations will not only focus on those transporting the cocaine, but also those that finance and mastermind this illegal trade."
