Mr. Desmond Bugbilla, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bawku West, has appealed to Ghanaians to complement government efforts in managing disasters.

He said this when the district marked International Day for Disaster Reduction at Zebilla on the theme "Hospitals Save from Disasters" on Sunday.

The occasion, which should have been celebrated on October 08, was postponed.

Mr Bugbilla said managing and preventing disasters was a shared responsibility and not for government alone and called for attitudinal and behavioural changes in managing disasters.

He stressed the need for all institutions to put in place pre-emptive mechanisms to control disasters before they occurred and avoid the practice where they sit unconcerned before disasters strike.

He expressed regret that huge sums of monies that could have been channelled into development projects were used to address disaster related issues that could have been prevented.

Mr. Bugbilla appealed to institutions including schools and estate developers to cultivate the habit of planting trees to serve as windbreaks to protect buildings.

He said as part of efforts to get the Zebilla and its environs tidy and green his outfit had instituted last Saturday of every month for general cleaning.

It has in addition instituted an award scheme for communities in the district that protect the environment by ensuring that there were no bushes burning in their area.

The District Director of Ghana Health Services, Mrs. Mary-Stella Adapeah, commended the Assembly for supporting the hospital with a generator valued at 30,000 Ghana cedis.
