Clergyman condemns reported malpractices during voter registration

A clergyman of the Methodist Church, Ghana, has condemned reported malpractices that characterized the recent limited voters' registration exercise, saying it should not be allowed to recur.

“Some of us must bow down our heads in shame for knowingly urging on persons who are below 18 (years) to be registered. We have also encouraged some aliens to be registered while some have also registered more than once,” Right Reverend Ebenezer Henry Brew-Riverson told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Friday.

He said these developments had seriously contributed to the issue of corruption and also tainted the integrity of the voters' register.

Rev Brew-Riverson appealed to leaders of political parties to always impress upon their members to conduct their politicking devoid of conflicts, vandalism and malpractices.

He urged those who were misled into engaging in malpractices to repent and adopt laid down procedures to correct them.

This, he said, was crucial to maintain the credibility of the register while also ensuring that the December elections were free and fair.
