THE heavy military-cum-police presence in the Tema metropolis, both day and night has forced armed robbers to change their modus operandi.

Rather than attacking their victims on the spur of the moment, they now trail them to their homes before attacking them.

They also pose as taxi drivers and attack motorists who park off the shoulders of the Accra-Tema Motorway to urinate.

The Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Inspector Olivia Turkson, revealed this on Thursday when briefing the media. She cited three cases, one involving a woman, who was trailed to her house and robbed at gunpoint at Sakumono.

She said some robbers also pretend to be taxi drivers and with two or three accomplices as passengers, already in their cabs, rob at gunpoint and with knives unsuspecting passengers who board such taxis.

Others, the Public Affairs Officer revealed, trail occupants of private cars to their homes and robbed them of their money and cars.

She, therefore, warned drivers to desist from picking up unknown persons, especially ladies, since some of them turn out to be accomplices of the robbers.

'Private car drivers should also be cautious while driving, particularly when they observe a particular car following them,' she advised.

While advising members of the public to refrain from having huge sums of money in their houses, Inspector Turkson also asked people to walk in groups, particularly at night, to deter robbers from attacking them.
