Nana Kwame Bediako, an independent presidential candidate, has explained his promise to dredge the sea to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region.

Speaking on Abusua FM in Kumasi on Monday, March 18, the New Force leader noted that importing and exporting goods between the coastal port of Tema and Kumasi currently requires long road journeys of over six hours.

This increases transport costs for businesses and often results in damage to perishable items, he said.

Dredging the sea would provide a more sustainable alternative, according to the business magnate.

"By the time one container gets here from Tema, half of its content are either broken or gone bad. If we had sea access, 500 containers could get here in one hour", Nana Kwame Bediako stated.

He envisages ships being able to dock directly in Kumasi just like ports in other major cities.

This, he said, will drastically boost trade volumes and lower costs for the region.

Nana Kwame Bediako believes dredging the sea is crucial to industrialising the Ashanti region and taking advantage of opportunities in manufacturing.
