Retired Warrant Officer Salifu Amankwa, the dreaded head of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Sanitation Task Force, died yesterday in Tamale after a protracted illness.Salifu Amankwa gained notoriety as a brutish apologist of the Rawlings Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) junta and was rewarded with the command of Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where he allegedly killed a man who was said to have flouted one of his rules in that part of the city.

The case which hit a cul de sac through a subtle state intervention during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime, resurfaced at the hearings of the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) when the family of the deceased made an appearance.

Salifu Amankwa was a soldier of the Airborne Force, a Tamale-headquartered unit of the Ghana Army, in which he served for most part of his military career. The Rawlings regime found him a loyal man on whom they depended for miscellaneous services, for which they reciprocated in various forms. He has since been buried in line with Islamic Convention.
