Rawlings was never the founder of constitutional rule in Ghana — Kwesi Pratt

Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of The Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr claims the late former President Jerry John Rawlings was not the founder of constitutional rule in Ghana.

Kwesi Pratt made this claim earlier today, January 28, during a panel discussion on Pan African TV's 'Good Morning Africa' program which was hosted by Kwame Owusu Danso.

According to Mr. Pratt who was an active journalist during Rawlings' hey days, Rawlings should not be recognised as the one behind the constitutional rule the country is enjoying today as he [Rawlings] personally said in an interview on Asaase Radio that he was not willing to or in favor of transiting into constitutional rule.

He argued that if Rawlings was really in favour of returning the country to constitutional rule, he would not have detained and tortured the likes of Akoto Ampaw.

"Look at somebody like Akoto Ampaw, Professor Kwame Karikari, Ndebugri and so on who actually suffered detention without trial and in some cases tortured and so on to bring about constitutional rule," he revealed.

He continued, "Last year; I'm talking about 2020. Just a few month ago, Rawlings granted an interview on Asaase FM in which he stated clearly that he was not in favor of returning to constitutional rule...couple of months ago so how does he become the founder, the initiator of constitutional rule when he was so opposed to it."

He added that crediting the late Rawlings for the transition to constitution rule from military rule in Ghana is an insult to the gallant men and women who actually fought for the constitutional rule that " we see in the country today.

"I think all of these statements are insults to the memory of the gallant men and women of Ghana who laid down their lives to struggle to establish constitutional rule," he emphasised.
