Plans underway to evacuate Ghanaians in Lebanon

Government has set up a three-member committee to supervise the evacuation of Ghanaians who have been caught up in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

The committee is made up of the Ministers for National Security, Foreign Affairs and the Interior. Addressing a press conference in Accra, Foreign Minister, Nana Akuffo Addo, expressed government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all its citizens in Lebanon.

The difficulty however is that many of the Ghanaians in Lebanon have not registered with the embassy there.

Therefore there are government does not know the exact number of Ghanaians in the beleaguered country. Nana Akuffo Addo said there have been no reports of any Ghanaian casualties.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has given the assurance that Ghanaian troops serving with the UN's peacekeeping mission in Lebanon are all safe and well.

A statement from the army's public relations directorate said if the need arises for the soldiers to be evacuated it would be the responsibility of the United Nations.
