Accra, March 26, GNA - Madam Anais (rpt Anais) Dayamba, African Women in Educational Networking (AWEN) Programme Officer of the Africa Regional branch of Education Internal, has appealed to trade unions to invest in viable projects, as part of income-generating activities.

She said it would be in the great interest of their members, explaining that, part of the generated funds could go to support workers who would not be receiving wages or salaries, in case of wrongful dismissals resulting from industrial actions or otherwise.

Madam Dayamba made the appeal when she addressed members of the women committees of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), drawn from the regions at a workshop organized by TEWU under the auspice of Education International.

She said grants coming to them must be put to good use, otherwise donors shall withdraw after realizing that after many years of support, recipients are found unsustainable.

Madam Dayamba urged the women group to organize more activities and to also network with ladies in other organizations, so as to gain more experience.

Mr Ralph Apaaya, General Secretary of TEWU, urged them to put into practice what they have learnt, and share their knowledge with colleagues who did not have the advantage to attend the workshop.

He also urged them to explore avenues for material support which would enhance union activities.

In a resolution passed by the 31 participants, they called on the leadership of the union to create a women's desk, with the appointment of a female officer as head.
