Conquerors RFC won the 2016/17 Ghana Rugby Football League when they beat arch rivals Cosmos Buffalos RFC 24-3 in a tough battle final match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.
The game which was watched by a sizeable crowd including the President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Herbert Mensah saw some excellent and brave performances.
Although Cosmos were down, they never gave up the fight for the ball and showed that they also have players who when encouraged can do better.
Coach Lovemore Kuzorera from Zimbabwe who handled the Conquerors said Ghana Rugby Football has developed rapidly and it is now left with publicity for the fans to come in their numbers to watch the exciting runs.
He noted that their opponents put up very good challenge and good tackles that prevented Conquerors from scoring more points.
Coach Amuzu who had tasted success in the past commended the victors and promised to come back better and well-motivated. He urged corporate Ghana to support the game of Rugby because it is thrilling and can take many strong men from the streets to become big time sports personalities. “Our team is in transition and we are rebuilding, we have young boys who are getting into the game so it shall be well” he said.
Cosmos star player. Reuben Bannerman who is a member of the national junior team said most of their top players were featuring for Conquerors yet they had it tough.
He prayed that more youth will take to sports, especially Rugby Football because there are opportunities in sports.
Naa Amerley Commey, a student journalist commented that Rugby is not dangerous as people think because the players love what they do. She hoped that sponsors would come on board to support the game, so that players, officials, medic, media and security are paid well.
In the game for the bronze or third place, Griffons defeated Lions 55-3.
There was an exhibition seven-a-side female game in which Cosmos Ladies proved too powerful for the Conquerors female team. The game ended 12-5 in favour of Cosmos.
