Businessman donates footballs to Black Maidens

Accra, May 26, GNA – Mr Cornelius Yakah, a Tema-based businessman, has donated 50 footballs to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) towards the participation of the Black Maidens, the national under17 Women's Soccer team, in the September World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Making the presentation at the GFA's office in Accra, Mr Yakah said the gesture was to motivate the team to give of their best in the tournament.

“We have been following with keen interest the interventions and assistance of the GFA to our national teams, hence my family's decision to make this donation as our widow's mite to augment your efforts,” he said.

According to Mr Yakah, football as a sporting discipline, has a great potential to unify the nation and appealed to Ghanaians who have passion for soccer to offer support to the national teams.

The President of the GFA, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, who received the balls, lauded the exemplary initiative of the patriotic benefactor, and expressed the GFA's gratitude for his contribution towards promoting soccer.

He said his long-term investment in the black maidens would forever be cherished by all Ghanaians.

Mr Nyantakyi used the occasion to call on others to emulate Mr Yakah, 74.

The Black Maidens booked their place at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Azerbaijan after thrashing South Africa 5-1 in Accra. The final tournament would be held in Azerbaijan from September 22 to October 13.
