
Accra , May 21, GNA - Eighteen (18) year old Yao Dogbe of Achimota Gold Club lifted the prestigious MTN Asantehene Gold Cup at stake at the three-day golf tournament played in Kumasi.
He hit a gross score of 145 from the 18-hole scratch to win the ultimate prize.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, was on hand to present him with the giant trophy.
Kofi Yeboah from Koforidua-Tafo came second, scoring a gross of 146 with S. Atiogba from Tema, taking the third position with a score of 148.
More than 300 golfers from across the country participated.
In the ladies competition, Jessica Tei of Achimota Golf Club emerged the winner, with a gross score of 180, with Grace Afriyie of Tema coming second after she scored 181 and Felicity Okyei Gyeabour of the Kumasi Royal Golf Club taking the third place, with 183 score.
The professional event saw Kwame Korsah and Kojo Barnni both of Achimota sharing honours at the top spot with a gross score of 300 apiece.
Godwin Sai also of Achimota came second with a count back score of 300 while the third position went to T. K. Govinous, who scored 303.
They all received cash prizes.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu used the occasion to present a cheque for GH¢20,000.00 to help improve facilities at the Kumasi Royal Golf Club.
The Asantehene, a Patron of the Club, appealed to managers of the Club to work hard to promote and attract more golfers to future competitions.
He praised the sponsors of the tournament for their contribution to the development of the sport.
Mr Michael Ikpoki, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, said the company was delighted to be associated with the tournament.
He said they would continue to support chiefs effort to bring socio-economic progress to their people.
Mr Kwasi Appiah, Captain of the Kumasi Royal Golf Club, said as part of an aggressive push towards the development and growth of golf in the Ashanti Region, they have registered 57 kids for a junior competition, this year.
