Ghana's Kingsley Schindler replaces injured Tariq Lamptey for AFCON qualifiers

Cup of Nations Ghana's Kingsley Schindler replaces injured Tariq Lamptey for AFCON qualifiers
MAR 21, 2023 LISTEN

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has announced Kingsley Schindler as a late invite to the 25-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

For this reason he cannot be a replacement for Tariq Lamptey who withdrew from the team due to injury.

Schindler, who is yet to play for the senior national team, is expected to join his teammates for preparations ahead of the team's match against Angola.

The 29-year-old Schindler currently plays as a right full-back for FC Köln in the German Bundesliga, where he has featured in 20 matches this season.

Ghana will play Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday, before the second leg in Luanda four days later. The Black Stars will be looking to secure a win in their first match of the AFCON qualifiers, and Schindler's addition to the squad will provide the team with more options at the back.

Ghana is one of the teams expected to make a deep run in the tournament, having reached the final twice in the past decade, but failing to win on both occasions. The team will be hoping to go one better this time around and lift the trophy for the first time since 1982.
