Kumasi, Jan 31, GNA - The Kumasi South Hospital recorded 843 cases of hypertension last year as against 564 cases recorded the previous year, showing an increase of 67 per cent. Dr Frank Abebrese, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said the trend was a clear sign that the disease was affecting more people.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi at the weekend, Dr Abebrese urged people to check the functioning of their kidneys that, he said, were slightly related to hypertension. He said uncomplicated malaria topped the number of diseases recorded at the hospital that reached 15,126 cases, skin diseases and ulcer cases were 11,756, cough and cold stood at 11,553, home occupational injuries totalled 10,945 and diarrhoea numbered 2,389.
