APR 25, 2018 LISTEN

The Brong-Ahafo Office of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DoVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has warned that parents and guardians who exposed their children to dangers would be arrested and prosecuted.

The Unit has therefore advised parents to protect their children in addition to ensuring their socio-economic needs by providing them with quality formal education, nutritious food, clothing and shelter.

Parents and guardians must not carelessly and irresponsibly leave the children and wards to be roaming about in the streets, because that did not help the children in their proper upbringing for them to become assets to their families, communities and the country.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Setina Aboagye, the Regional Coordinator of the Unit, gave the warning in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Thursday in Sunyani, hinting that her outfit would soon be on the street to arrest mothers who exposed their children to dangers for prosecution.

She said it was an abuse for children of school going age to be on the streets, particularly during school hours, lamenting that some of the parents used the children to beg for money.

DSP Aboagye expressed regret that such children were exposed to dangers at the mercy of the weather and could also be run over by moving vehicles.

She entreated parents who left their children to go to school alone to arrange for well-known taxi drivers, if there was no school bus, to take the children to school and bring them back home safely. She cautioned that the drivers should be well known within the communities because some wicked drivers could also take advantage of the children and rape or defile them with threats.

But where the children walked from home to school, parents must ensure the routes were safe for use by children, DSP Aboagye added.
