The Pru District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has begun the process of constructing 39 dams across the length and breadth of the district to provide irrigation to farmers so that they could undertake an all-year-round farming.

To this end, the district has undertaken feasibility studies and submitted proposals to government for work to begin on the construction of the dams in 2018. The Pru River and the Volta Lake would play pivotal roles in this exercise.

The Pru District Chief Executive, Stephen Jalulah, disclosed this in an interview with the modernghana.com on the sidelines of the 33rd Farmers Day celebrations held at Adjalaja-Beposo near Prang.

He said the Pru district was a predominantly farming area and so the Assembly would do everything possible to protect the interest of the farmers to enable them carry out their farming activities with ease to boost food production and ensure food security.

Mr. Jalulah said irregular rainfall pattern remained a major challenge facing farmers in the Pru District and expressed the hope that the construction of the 39 dams under the government’s One-Village, One-Dam policy would be of great relief to the people.

Touching on post-harvest losses, Mr. Jalulah said plans were far advanced to put up a warehouse in the district for the storage of foodstuff produced in the area.

According to him, proposals for the setting up of at least two factories in the district were also being worked on and assured that the Pru District would never be left out in the distribution of the national cake.

The district, he said, would have Rice Processing Factory as well as Fruit Processing Factory, under the second batch of factories which would be rolled out by the One-District, One-Factory Secretariat next year.

When completed, the two factories would add value to the raw materials which are produced in high quantities in the area while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs and improving the livelihoods of the people of the area.

Meanwhile, 18 farmers were honoured at this year’s edition of Pru District Farmers’ Day celebration which took place at Adjalaja-Beposo near Prang under the theme, “Farming for food and jobs.”

50-year-old Yaw Atta, who has been farming for the last 16 years, was adjudged the 2017 District Best Farmer.

He has 130 acres of yam, 50 acres of maize, 109 acres of rice, and ten acres each of cassava and ground-nuts as well as 50 sheep, 30 goats, 25 cattle and 95 birds in his poultry, among others.

Prizes for the award winners included Motor-bikes, Tricycles, Bicycles, and Refrigerators, Sound systems, Wellington boots and machetes, among others.

The DCE of the area, Stephen Jalulah congratulated them and encouraged them to work harder in the coming years.
