Brouhaha over MMT MD's Official Vehicle

Feature Article Brouhaha over MMT MD's Official Vehicle
SEP 25, 2017 LISTEN

When someone is appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of a Company or business entity, the success or failure of the Company would depend on how efficient and effective the MD is. Of course, the MD would lead a team for the success of the Company. But when the Company fails, the first head to roll will be that of the MD.

Therefore the MD needs the peace of mind to work.
A Managing Director is accountable to the appointing authority which admonished him/her to uphold the business practices and ethics of the said Company on the day they are sworn in.

With the aforementioned in mind, Mr Bennet Aboagye (the MD for Metro Mass Transit Ghana) sent a letter dated 8th September 2017 to the MMT Governing Board and respectfully requested approval for a vehicle befitting his office to be purchased for him. This is in line with practices of State Owned Enterprises (SOE's).

MMT used to have two Executive Managing positions (the MD and his Deputy). Each had an official vehicle. The executive management structure has, however, been upgraded to the MD and two Deputies. The two available vehicles are being used by the two Deputies (a decision taken by Management) while the MD has been driving his private or personal car to and from work daily for the past four months.

Mr Bennet Aboagye's ethical, legal, and professionally appropriate request has ruffled the corrupt feathers of MMT's Union leaders. Please check out his achievements in just four months of being in office:

  1. Improved revenue from GhC 160,000.00 to GhC 230,000.00 per day.
  2. MMT losses reduced from GhC 2.5 million a month to GhC 1.6 million a month
  3. A new infrastructure account has been set up for the upgrading of MMT terminals
  4. MMT employees now get paid on the first day of the month instead of the 10th day of the month.

So what is this brouhaha from a Union that is supposed to support MMT's Management for the success of this government enterprise? "Is this one too a Union?".

The discerning Ghanaian public should watch out for more of such politically motivated industrial agitations.
