By GADeF

Youth in Brong Ahafo joins the nation and the rest of the world to celebrate International Youth Day on August 12, 2016. It is an awareness day set aside by the United Nations and is meant to be an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. GADeF is celebrating this day with the youth in the region under the theme “Investing in youth towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

The Global Alliance for Development Foundation (GADeF) invests in the extraordinary potential of young people. Founded in 2008 and registered in August 2010 and June 2016 in Ghana and South Africa respectively as a local youth development and philanthropy foundation, GADeF builds and maintains a worldwide community of civil society organizations, businesses and governments committed to empowering youth and young women to be healthy, productive and engaged citizens.

GADeF programs are catalysts of positive change that helps young people obtain quality education, gain employable skills, make healthy choices, and improve their communities. It is the mission of GADeF to mobilize financial and human capital in partnerships with global and local organizations to catalyze positive changes in the areas of wealth creation, poverty reduction, vulnerable and marginalized populations, youth employment, sustainable environment and community development.

All over the world, there is growing attention to the importance of involving young people as actors in their own right throughout all the stages and processes of our nation’s development. Slowly but surely, many stakeholders are realizing that investing in youth means a commitment not only to their improved well-being and livelihoods but also to the economic, social and cultural development of future generations and that failure to make such investments can result in steep societal costs.

On this day, GADeF will organise partnership campaign tour to call on stakeholders attention on making youth empowerment and participation in decision making a priority and to harness their potentials through the District Youth Parliament, social media platforms and the youth network- Asutifi Graduates and Students Union (AGSU) under the Youth Power Project that is being piloted in the Asutifi North District in the Brong Ahafo region, Ghana.

The District Youth Parliament will not only help to increase the commitment of youth in decision making and for local development but will also help the youth to be seriously engage through dialogue and share their views and opinions about efforts being made towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals in both the Asutifi North District and the Brong Ahafo region. GADeF will work with its partners to strengthen the Asutifi Graduates and Students Union (AGSU) aimed to mobilize youth in Asutifi to have one voice with a common vision to increase attention and investment on critical youth issues in their communities. We also note with concern cases of youth-adult conflict and lack of trust for the youth, which have largely affected the youth. We will continue to urge the youth to be aware of opportunities in their locality and in the region.

It is in respect of the youth power project under the support of French Embassy and the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana on youth empowerment and participation that we urge Government, relevant departments, corporate organizations and partners to promote full and effective participation of young people in decision-making at all levels and to ensure that young people are provided with financial and technical support as well plan for and with them to for their sustainable future. The project is aimed at motivating young people to recognize and take chances in intervening and participating in the shaping of policies and thus making their voice heard.

Happy International Youth Day!
