8-month old baby dies 3 weeks after surgery to correct abnormal brain condition

Eight month old baby who recently received donor support to undergo surgery for hydrocephalus - an abnormal accumulation of fluids on the brain - has passed away.

Little Precious Adusei was discharged from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital three weeks ago, during which her condition improved tremendously.

Her parents however woke up Tuesday morning to see their first child lifeless, though they had gone to bed with her in fairly good condition.

Three individuals had donated cash to support the surgery of the baby who had been diagnosed of the life-threatening brain defect.

Accra- based businessman, Jerry Owusu, and a pharmacist in the Eastern Region donated 2,000 Ghana cedis each while Chief Executive Officer of Young Educators Foundation, Eugenia Tachie-Menson gave 500 Ghana cedis.

It followed Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah's report on the plight of the baby who was once adored by many, but later shunned because of her deformity.

After being discharged from the hospital following the surgery, Precious was admitted again, at the Pediatric Emergency Unit (PEU) late last month before being referred again to B5 Ward.

Doctors had scheduled a second surgery but a CT-scan report prompted them to reverse the decision as the baby had frequent fever and seizures.

It was all joy and an end to the devastation of Precious' young parents', when she was discharged from B5 Ward.

Until her death, her mother could carry her on her back unlike before the surgery when that was impossible since she was born.

Precious' mother, Akua Afriyie, had noticed something unusual about her daughter- she has intermittently been stretching and showing signs of pain on her face.

The mother had planned to send her to hospital Tuesday morning after speaking to this reporter, but that review never was, as the girl died on that fateful morning.

Meanwhile, one of the donors, a pharmacist has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

“ I'm sorry to hear that. My heart-felt condolence to her (Precious) parents”, he said.
