Residents of Assin Atobiase are living in perpetual fear as a gas tanker which was involved in an accident has been left in the bush near the community for over three months now.
The tanker, with the inscription “THOMHCOF,” is said to have been involved in an accident about three months ago.
Owners of the tanker have, however, failed to evacuate the tanker since then.
Officials of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) say the tanker poses a great danger to the community, especially with the onset of the harmattan season.
The Central Regional Manager of the NRSC, Mr Stephen Anokye, said the commission was not sure of the quantity of gas in the tanker.
He noted that considering the fact that fires were rampant in the harmattan season, it was necessary for the owners of the tanker to evacuate it as a matter of urgency.
He indicated that any explosion could be catastrophic.
Officials of the NRSC and the District Chief Executive for the area, Ms Sabina Appiah-Kubi, have visited the site and met with the chiefs of Assin Atobiase.
Mr Anokye urged the people to be cautious in their activities to prevent any disaster.
Ms Appiah-Kubi pledged that the assembly would collaborate with the appropriate agencies and ensure that the owners removed the tanker as soon as possible.
The Chief of Atobiase, Nana Affram Nenemeh II, expressed concern that the tanker had been left there and prayed that it would be removed as soon as possible.
