Ashanti Region Tops Multiple Registration

Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, EC Chairman The Electoral Commission (EC) has so far detected 8,121 cases of multiple registration involving 2,864 individuals.

According to an official statement issued by the EC in Accra Thursday, the Ashanti Region topped the list with 424 cases, followed by Brong Ahafo with 411.

The statement, signed by the acting Director of Public Affairs, Mr Christian Owusu-Parry, gave the regional breakdown as follows:

Greater Accra, 335; Volta,326; Central, 318; Eastern, 254; Western, 225; Northern, 289; Upper East, 162, and Upper West, 120.

It said an adjudicating committee had been put in place to vet all the identified cases.

It said the search for cases of multiple registration was ongoing and more of such cases might be found.

According to the statement, people found to have been deliberately engaged in multiple registration would have their names deleted from the voter database and, by extension, the register of voters, in addition to whatever penalty a court might prescribe.

It cautioned the public that the system had the capacity to detect all cases of double registration, for which reason persons contemplating to engage in that should desist from doing so.

Meanwhile, the EC has said that, in consultation with the Ghana Prisons authorities, it had deferred the registration of prisoners in the ongoing biometric voters registration until further notice.

It said the deferment had become necessary to give the authorities ample time to resolve issues regarding the true identities of some of the inmates of the prisons.

The EC said it would make the necessary arrangement to register the prisoners as soon as the matter was resolved.
