The chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education, Larry Bimi, has lashed out at human rights activists who quickly jump to the defence of criminals anytime they are caught in the web of the police.

This attitude, he said, had rather emboldened these criminals to commit more heinous crimes because they have people to speak for them.

Mr. Bimi said this in response to a question at the sidelines of a workshop organised by the NCCE in Accra as to whether the police were justified in killing suspected armed robbers and quite recently, the dragging of Kombian, the jail breaker, to the court even though he was in severe pains.

He said instead of consoling the families of victims of armed robbery, these human rights activists rather appear to show concern for the criminals in their comments, making it seem as if they are justified in their actions.

“I don't even know whether these activists are abreast of current happenings in the world regarding how criminals are handled when caught,” he said, adding, "no country would allow criminals to override its security agencies, it doesn't happen."

The chairman further asked the activists to ponder over the comments they make regarding the current happenings in order not to worsen the grief of families who have been subjected to armed robbery.
