Kumasi, April, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), has arrested a total of 136 people for various traffic offences last year.
The offences ranged from over-speeding, driving without license and warning triangles, drunk-driving, parking and picking passengers at unauthorized places to failing to heed to the traffic light signal.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Timbillah, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, announced this at the Annual West African Security Services Association celebration of the Regional Police Command, in Kumasi.
The occasion was used by the Police to appraise their performance, identify failures and look for the ways of improving upon their operations.
DCOP Timbilla said that said that the court imposed a total fine of 4, 600 Ghana Cedis on the offenders and that the region recorded 279 cases of violent crimes in 2008 as against 227 of such cases in 2009.
He attributed the reduction in crimes last year to the collaboration between the Police and public as well as the hard work of the personnel.
Mr Kofi Opoku-Manu, Ashanti Regional Minister, called on the Police to refrain from malpractices so that they could win public trust in the discharge of their duties.
Baffour Asare Owusu Amankwatia V, Chief of Bantama in Kumasi, lauded the Police for their commitment to duty which had helped to reduce crimes in Ashanti.
