ICT module of NYEP launched in Ho

Ho, Feb. 7, GNA - The Information, Communication Technology module of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP-ICT), has been launched in Ho with a call on the youth to embrace opportunities targeted for economic self-reliance.

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, who said this in an address read for him on Saturday, described the innovation as a masterpiece, forward-looking and interplay between public-private partnerships.

He said youth unemployment has become a global issue due to the labour imbalance between demand and supply, and pledged his total support to initiatives targeted at empowering the youth.

Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister said government would enact appropriate legislation to streamline the operations of NYEP and establish the NYEP Fund to ensure expansion and attract the youth on a sustainable basis.

He said ICT was a crucial drive towards Ghana's information and knowledge economy for the achievement of the "Better Ghana" agenda.

Mr Amenowode said the Ministry of Youth and Sports has taken the initiative to promote youth entrepreneurship, adding that, youth groups with creative business acumen would benefit from capacity building, mentoring, logistics and seed funds to incorporate business on sustainable basis.

Mr Frederick Adetola, Chief Operations Officer of RLG Communications, said the Company would continue to be a pacesetter and secure an enviable space in the mobile telephony industry, which had provided the platform for government, development partners and the private sector to create and generate wealth.

He said the company's next major project was to build an ultra-modern assembling plant by the close of March, this year.

Mr Adetola said over 20,000 youths from the partnership with NYEP would employ beneficiaries on permanent basis, towards enhancing national growth and socio-economic development.

Mr Nurudeen Hamidan, Operations Director of NYEP said government would implement the Youth in Agriculture, National Forest Plantation Development Programme, Agricultural Mechanisation Service Centres Programmes, garnered towards empowering the youth to contribute productively to national development agenda.

He said about 200,000 youths across board would be employed under the NYEP this year and appealed to those in the Volta region to embrace the concept to better their lots.

Ms Jessy Ekumebu, Volta Regional Coordinator of NYEP said the initiative was another bold strategy to curb urban-rural migration of the youths in search of un-existing jobs.
