The embattled Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Antiye Tetteh who is facing criminal charges for stealing state funds has been suspended by the Union.

His letter of suspension dated 3 June 2002 signed by the National GPRTU Chairman, Mr E.K. Gbedemah and made available to the Evening News said, “it has been brought to the notice of the National Secretariat that you have been charged with a criminal offence before the Circuit Tribunal in Tema.”

The letter noted that since Alhaji Tetteh was under criminal trial, the GPRTU constitution cannot allow him to carry out his official duty as a regional chairman. Article 21 of the 1999 constitution of the GPRTU states that “an officer accused of a criminal offence shall be interdicted with two thirds salary or allowance.”

The letter further asked Alhaji Tetteh to hand over to his vice chairman, Mr Ebenezer Acquaye Kodjo, until the case against him is disposed off. When contacted, Mr Kodjo, confirmed the story and said he took over on 2 June 2002 as directed by a letter from the national secretariat.

It is recalled that Alhaji Tetteh was picked up by the Police at his residence on Wednesday 15 May 2002 and detained at the Tema Regional Police Headquarters. A week later, he was arraigned before a Tema Circuit Tribunal charged with conspiracy and stealing ¢127 million belonging to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He was charged with four other accused persons, however, two are now deceased.

The crime was said to have been committed in September 1995 but they could not be charged before court because the then Attorney-General, Dr Obed Asamoah, recommended that there was not enough evidence to incriminate the accused persons. However, the office of the Attorney-General has now recommended their prosecution in a trial court.
