The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known affectionately as Chairman Wontumi, says the ruling party is confident of retaining power in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Akoma FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, Wontumi said the NPP has a good chance of breaking the tradition where power alternates every eight years due to the performance of the government.
"In 2008 when the NPP had finished its eight years term and looking to break the 8, there were a lot of despondency but, now the narrative is different because the government is performing and meeting the expectations of the people, this gives us confidence that breaking the 8 is possible this time around," he said.
Chairman Wontumi cited ongoing infrastructure projects like roads as evidence of the performance of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.
He contrasted this with the record of former president John Mahama who he said 'neglected' the Ashanti region.
According to the NPP stalwart, the opposition leader has nothing to offer the Ashanti region should he regain power in the upcoming polls.
"Mahama has nothing good to offer this region, during his time he introduced Capitation under the NHIS and this created a lot of problems for the people, we still remember; he neglected the people of the Ashanti region. Look at the massive road projects this government is embarking on," Wontumi said.
