A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national communications team, Alfred Thompson, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of abusing state power and acting as though it will remain in office indefinitely.
His comments follow the re-arrest of former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food and Buffer Stock Company, Abdul-Wahab Hanan Aludiba, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, shortly after the Attorney-General withdrew all charges against them on Tuesday, May 5, citing fresh evidence.
The case relates to alleged irregularities in the procurement and supply of foodstuffs under the national school feeding programme, with earlier claims of a financial loss of about GH¢78 million to the state.
Concerns have also been raised over claims that the accused persons were initially denied access to their lawyers during the re-arrest process.
Speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV on Thursday, Mr Thompson argued that the conduct of the state reflects misuse of prosecutorial powers and disregard for due process.
“It’s unfortunate that when people get power, they get drunk into power. It’s unfortunate that NDC feels that they are the only political power that will stay in power for the next 100 years,” he said.
He accused the government of politicising legal processes and prejudging cases before proper court proceedings are completed.
“You can’t come on air and convict someone without proof… it must be beyond reasonable doubt before you can even state a conviction,” he stated.
Mr Thompson further questioned the legality and consistency of the re-arrest process, describing it as a violation of human rights.
He argued that the handling of the case raises concerns about fairness and equal treatment under the law.
He stressed that no citizen should be subjected to what he described as arbitrary arrest and release patterns.
The NPP communicator further called for equal application of justice.
