'You will be arrested' — Police warns individuals engaging in criminality under content creation

The Ghana Police Service has cautioned that it will not spare anyone who engages in criminal acts under the guise of content creation.

The law enforcement agency has expressed concern over the increasing trend where some individuals engage in acts such as impersonating bandits and issuing threats that cause fear and panic among the public.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Friday, May 8, Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the police had intensified efforts to clamp down on such conduct.

“There have been occasions where some of these persons have threatened security personnel. Some have conducted themselves in ways that have caused fear and panic within the Ghanaian society,” she stated.

According to her, some content creators also use social media platforms to spread misinformation and disinformation, a development she said poses a threat to public safety and national security.

She warned that the police would continue to monitor online spaces and take action against anyone found engaging in unlawful acts.

“If you engage in any act, any behaviour, any conduct in any shape or form that borders on criminality, the Ghana Police Service will fish you out, pursue you, get you arrested and bring you to face the full rigours of the law,” DCOP Ansah-Akrofi cautioned.

She referenced the recent arrest of an individual who allegedly appeared online masked and threatened to kill security personnel.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect later claimed he was only creating content.

The police spokesperson stressed that criminal behaviour would not be tolerated regardless of the excuse given.
