A member of the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye was arrested and detained in police custody overnight on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

Hopeson Adorye, who was seen in a video engaged in a verbal confrontation with a police officer when he was being whisked out of the police headquarters to court in Accra.

This happened when Adorye was being moved out of the Ministries police station into a waiting vehicle.

Suddenly, Adorye stopped and started engaging his lawyer, Ken Kuranchie.

He attempted to speak to Kuranchie while he was being moved into a police vehicle, but the officer interjected and asked him to move quickly into the vehicle.

It was during that point that Adorye yelled at the police officer, saying, "I am talking to my lawyer, please, I am talking to my lawyer and then you are preventing me. What is the meaning of that? Are you the only Police officer?"

Reacting to this on his X platform, Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) described the arrest as ruthless.

He wrote, “Hmmmmmmm!!! Reminds me of when I was arrested for saying that “there would be a civilian coup” in 2018. Except that I was not handcuffed and I was very cooperative with the police. The law can be very ruthless.”

Mr. Adorye’s arrest follows his claim on Accra FM on May 10, 2024 of how he gathered a team to scare Togolese from coming to vote in Ghana.

He explained that it was part of their strategy involving creating fear by causing explosions, aimed at scaring Togolese nationals from attempting to vote in Ghana by detonating a dynamite.

Meanwhile, Mr Adorye has been granted bail on Thursday, May 23, 2024 by the Dansoman District Court, for GH¢20,000 with two sureties, one of which must be justified.

He was charged by the police for publication of false news.
